A lecture on the beginnings of monasticism in the 4th century, when women and men withdrew into the Egyptian desert. It shows that early monasticism was about far more than fleeing the world. In times of social crisis, new forms of community, spirituality and social engagement emerged. These left a lasting mark on Christianity and European culture.
