Machine Musicianship presented by ICST

"Machine Musicianship" is a concert series devoted to machine-based music-making with a player piano. It is presented by the Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology (ICST), which has owned a player piano developed by Winfried Ritsch since 2018. Its 88 electromagnets press all keys at once with differentiated dynamics, and since 2024 a pedal unit developed with ZHAW has extended the system. The performed compositions explore the artistic, technical and aesthetic potentials of algorithmically generated and machine-controlled music.
