About
"As Meninas Exemplares" is a feature film based on a 19th-century children's classic by the Countess of Ségur. It was directed by João Botelho. The film approaches the book through the eyes of the painter Paula Rego, who found in it a rich source for her simultaneously unsettling, provocative, and irreverent imagination. Blending cinema with Rego's distinctive visual universe, it explores the darker undertones beneath a seemingly innocent story of childhood, discipline, rebellion, and punishment.
