About
"Das Fräulein von Scuderie" is a 1955 film, one of the most elaborate DEFA productions, based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's crime novella of the same name. Film scholar Irina Vogt gives a talk on the film as part of the E.T.A. Hoffmann anniversary year. In the film, under the reign of Louis XIV a series of mysterious murders shakes Paris; all victims wore jewellery by the goldsmith Cardillac, and the 70-year-old Mademoiselle de Scudery investigates on her own. Eugen York directed, assembling an international ensemble around former Ufa star Henny Porten in her final role.

Critics
The only review offers no praise, calling the adaptation average. It faults the film's lack of atmosphere, tension and poetry.
