Reading: the Berliner Asyl-Verein für Obdachlose.
About
A reading about the Berliner Asyl-Verein für Obdachlose, which was the counter-model to the dominant church-style aid for homeless people, built a women's asylum from 1869 and created 1,100 overnight places in the »Wiesenburg« in Wedding by 1907. The event is presented by Winfried Ripp, an author of Berlin social history and historian, and Martin Düspohl, a curator and educator, at the August Bebel Institut. It is about the association's principle that homeless people are people in need who receive help without preconditions and with strict anonymity – no Christian agitation, control or punishment, which led to campaigns against the association. It also covers the around 4,000 members from all walks of life around 1900 and the outstanding personality Paul Singer, the »face« of the association.
