About
“CYCLOPS” is an intermedial performance at Ballhaus Naunynstrasse that places the camera at its centre as an omnipresent, all-powerful producer of images. Behind the piece is Zé de Paiva, whose directorial debut draws together his experience as an actor, dancer, photographer and video artist, together with the dancer Nasheeka Nedsreal. It is a dance with cables and eyes, a struggle for freedom of movement, in which the two, as Black protagonists, seek to distort the postcolonial order of images. Its themes are the hierarchy between those who look and those who are looked at, photography as an instrument of late colonialism, and the question of who controls the eye – the artificial cyclops.
