About

A public guided tour of the Gemäldegalerie titled „Einfach Kunst?! Orient und Okzident“, in which paintings by the Old Masters are looked at and interpreted together. Sabine Engel shows how European painting perceived the Orient from the Middle Ages onward – from exotic fabrics and precious spices to pilgrims, merchants and envoys. Orient and Occident stand not only for opposites, but also for cultural exchange and mutual inspiration. The tour also asks what these depictions reveal about their own era.
