Workshops and courses
Deciphering Sütterlin letters of flight and expulsion.
Familiengeschichten entziffern – Einführung in Sütterlin
About
A workshop in which letters, diaries and other handwritten documents about flight and expulsion are read, showing what personal testimonies of German refugees and expellees can convey. Many of these texts are written in Sütterlin; after a brief introduction to the history of the script, there is a practical approach to the letters and a joint deciphering of selected short texts from the Documentation Centre's collection. Participants are welcome to bring their own documents to try out reading historical handwriting. The workshop is led by Gesa Füßle, translator, editor and Sütterlin decipherer; participation is free, no registration is needed, and the number of places is limited.
