About

»Kohlhiesels Töchter« is a German silent film comedy from 1920. Director and co-author Ernst Lubitsch adapted Hanns Kräly's rustic farce as a »typically German« take on Shakespeare's »The Taming of the Shrew«, setting the story of innkeeper Kohlhiesel, his unlike daughters Liesl and Gretl and their suitors Xaver and Seppl in a snowy Bavarian village. Henny Porten, one of the first German film stars, scored a sensation in the double role of the feisty Liesl and the coquettish Gretl, in one of the biggest box-office hits of the Weimar Republic. The screening shows the restored version, digitized thanks to the Filmerbe funding programme.
