Lagaan – Es war einmal in Indien

About
"Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India" is an epic, anticolonial sports drama with impressive Bollywood-style musical numbers. Ashutosh Gowariker tells of the inhabitants of the small town of Champaner, who at the end of the 19th century fight against the land tax (lagaan) levied by the British colonial power during a drought. A haughty British officer challenges them to a cricket match against the British officers: if they win, they would be exempt from the tax for three years, if they lose, they would have to pay three times the amount. Led by Bhuvan (Aamir Khan), the inhabitants face the unequal struggle.

Critics
7.8Very good
Critics praise the rousing epic, the music, the immersive atmosphere and the thrilling cricket climax. Faults are the very long runtime and the one-dimensionally villainous portrayal of the British.
