»Madama Butterfly« is an opera by Giacomo Puccini, whose premiere takes place on 21 November 2026 at the Komische Oper Berlin at the Schillertheater. Andrea Breth directs the story of the young geisha Cio-Cio-San, who marries the American naval officer Pinkerton and is abandoned by him. While Pinkerton returns home to find a »proper« wife, Butterfly waits with their child for his return – until she grasps the truth and sees only one way out. The co-production with the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence and the Opéra National de Lyon relies on a painterly aesthetic with kimonos, cherry blossoms and cranes.
