About
1938 is a music and words event built around Czech composer Vitezslava Kapralova, who came to London in June 1938 to conduct the BBC Symphony Orchestra in her Military Sinfonietta to wide acclaim. Devised and directed by Theia Galena Charles, with musical direction by Andrew Campling and Caroline Soresby, it looks at 1938's dramatic events — Anschluss, Munich, Kristallnacht — through the lens of the composer, who died two years later at just 25. Anna Muradyan, Nick Bowater, Caroline Soresby, Andrew Campling and other performers present Kapralova's songs, piano and chamber works, alongside readings including Virginia Woolf, Kafka and Jan Neruda and the voices of Neville Chamberlain and Adolf Hitler.
