Double Bill: Amelia al ballo & Trouble in Tahiti
Barbican Arts Centre, Silk Street, EC2Y 8DS London, Barbican
£30, £15, £6
About
An evening of two short operas, Gian Carlo Menotti's Amelia al ballo and Leonard Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti, presented as a new double-bill production set in the 1950s. It is directed by Ashley Dean and promoted by the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Both works centre on female protagonists whose desires are constrained by the marriages meant to sustain them. Amelia al ballo, in its UK premiere, follows Amelia as she outwits a suspicious husband and needy lover to attend a grand ball, while Trouble in Tahiti shows how Dinah and Sam's seemingly perfect suburban life masks deep unhappiness.
