"Recent Work" is an exhibition of new paintings by the American artist Catherine Murphy, presented by the gallery Sadie Coles in London. It is her second solo exhibition in the city, showing works made in and around her home and studio in Poughkeepsie, New York. Murphy transforms everyday objects and scenes—crumpled shirts, a tumble dryer, footprints in snow—into meticulously realistic yet subtly surreal paintings. Using unexpected viewpoints, cropped compositions and heightened colour, she makes the familiar look strange and newly worth looking at.
