About
Flesh of Vessel is an exhibition of sculpture, moving image and installation running at 198 Contemporary Arts & Learning. It is by Soko Hwang, an artist who lives and works in Helsinki and Seoul, curated by Shane Sutherland in collaboration with the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland. The exhibition explores the desire to perpetuate order through the domination of bodies and the struggle of flesh that refuses subjugation, with ships, gardens, collections and zoos emerging as vessels that transport, classify and regulate bodies. Juxtaposing maritime hulls, Victorian glasshouses, garden design diagrams, Wardian cases, cabinets of curiosities and myths of Daphne and werewolves, it asks whether bodies can transcend the boundaries that constitute them.
