About
An art exhibition filling an entire contemporary art building with painting, ink works, handscrolls, garments, silk paintings, installation, video and text. It is the first UK institutional exhibition by Evelyn Taocheng Wang, a Netherlands-based artist, presented by the Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art. Through her 'make-up box' approach and her unreliable narrator 'The Cultural Whore', the works move between fiction, autobiography and cultural projection to assemble an idiosyncratic portrait of Britain shaped by translation, misunderstanding, desire and performance. New commissions explore the Chinese diasporic experience and Britain's cultural image in China, drawing on motifs from Kazuo Ishiguro's Remains of the Day, the film Titanic and Count Duckula, with paintings indebted to Agnes Martin.
