About

A symphony orchestra concert playing Hannah Kendall's The Spark Catchers, Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No 2 and Sibelius's Symphony No 1. It is given by the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra with pianist Ryan Sheng, conductor Antoine Veillerette leading the Kendall work, and guest conductor Eivind Gullberg Jensen directing the rest of the programme. The pieces move from an electrifying, socially resonant work inspired by a poem about the 1888 Bow Matchgirls' Strike, to a playful yet tender concerto written for the composer's son's piano exam, to a brooding yet romantic symphony.
