About

Meeting Mohini is a free photographic display at the Horniman Museum and Gardens, shown in the Balcony Gallery above the World Gallery. It presents work by Zoya Thomas Lobo, India's first transgender photojournalist, and is her first solo exhibition and her first outside India. The photographs look at Koovagam, where thousands of transgender women, non-binary and gender non-conforming people gather each year in the Tamil month of Chithirai to reenact the story of Aravan, who was married for a night by Krishna in his form as the goddess Mohini. The images capture the joy of the wedding day, the sadness of the funeral ceremony, and life outside the festival in Mumbai, shining a light on one of the oldest recognised transgender and LGBTQI+ communities in the world.
