Myth Migration
Lisson Gallery, Bell Street 27, London, Paddington
About
Myth Migration is an art exhibition inspired by Carmen Herrera's change in style after her move from Cuba to Paris in the late 1940s. It centres on a group of 20th-century artists who moved to spend formative time within new communities of artists and writers, from Mexico City and São Paulo to London and New York. The show groups related works made during and in the decades after World War II, each charting a new geographic or stylistic horizon, including an early, never-before-seen figurative work by Herrera. Featuring artists such as Wifredo Lam, Leonora Carrington, Alice Rahon, Mira Schendel and Chen Kong-Fang, it weaves through movements like Surrealism, Neo-Concretism and Existentialism to trace how each adopted country shaped their artistic practices.
