About

A world premiere play, 'THE BANALITY OF EVIL: HANNAH ARENDT, FRANCE, 1940', written and directed by Julia Pascal, presented by Arcola Theatre and Pascal Theatre Company. It follows Hannah Arendt, artist Charlotte Salomon and teenage Communist Eva Daube, three Jewish women interned in 1940 at Camp Gurs, the largest French internment camp near the Spanish border, from their arrest to their escape. Drawing on testimony, archival research and Arendt's own interviews, and weaving cabaret, physical theatre, satire and Brechtian theatricality, it uncovers the little-known story of thousands of refugees fleeing Hitler who were interned by the French state. The cast is led by Mai Weisz as Hannah Arendt, alongside Anna Eckhard as Charlotte Salomon and Ariella Barnett as Eva Daube, with Pat Dynowska as Trude, Helen Goldwyn as Agathe and Anja Fahlenkamp as musical composition & arrangement/ensemble.
