The Pornographers
Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Mall, London, Covent Garden
About
A screening of The Pornographers, Shohei Imamura's 1966 film about a small-time pornographer, occasional pimp and bootleg viagra salesman whose work revolves entirely around sex, until his own desires stray from his common-law wife to her teenage daughter. Almost every scene is viewed through a screen of some kind — a door frame, a window, even the water of a fish tank — as Imamura turns to the 'other Japan' of the lower classes and the lower half of the human body, subverting the family drama of his once boss Yasujirō Ozu in almost every way possible.

Critics
7.4Very good
Critics praise the film's subversive humour, skillful direction, and anthropological view of ordinary needs on society's margins. They fault little, perhaps its disjunctive, loosely structured narrative that unsettles conventional viewers.
