A Man Vanishes

About
A Man Vanishes is a film by Japanese director Shōhei Imamura, made in 1967. It begins as an investigative documentary into the mysterious disappearance of a Tokyo salesman named Ôshima. As Imamura, actor Tsuyuguchi Shigeru, and Ôshima's fiancé continue the search, their investigation is outpaced by the complexity of their subject, their own characters, and the film's restless invention. Through overlapping interviews sketching Ôshima's character and last days, Imamura builds a serpentine collage of facts, opinions and hearsay about how we present ourselves and how reality is constructed.

Critics
7.4Very good
Critics praise the film's ingenious, subversive blending of documentary and fiction and its innovative reflexivity ahead of its time. They fault little, beyond its demanding pacing and deliberate difficulty.
