About

"Area Coded: American Regionalism in Film" is a film series that travels through American cinema as a collection of distinct regions, each producing its own ways of living and seeing the world. It is programmed by Jessica Green as part of BAM Film 2026. The series explores how the Gulf Coast, West Texas, the Deep South, the Rocky Mountains, New England, the Rust Belt, and the Pacific Northwest have created the moving-image mythology of the United States over roughly 120 of its 250 years. Its films look beneath that mythology at the communities, contradictions, and local cultures that have become recognized around the world as American.
