Art Project Armazoen
Colonels Row - Colonels Row Houses
About
Art Project Armazoen is a dance film screened in a sea container on Governors Island, based on an excerpt from the log of the Dutch slave ship Hof van Zeeland, which made its first triangular voyage between Middelburg, Angola and the Caribbean between 1732 and 1734. The ship's log describes five Angolan women who chose to jump overboard rather than be enslaved, and those few sentences from the archive became the basis for this work, an ode to their resistance. It was conceived by Monique Duurvoort and Afra Jonker, with storyline, design, choreography, and direction by Monique Duurvoort and concept, including theme and subject matter, by Afra Jonker. The New York activation is presented by Black Gotham Experience.
