Cinématique

Cinématique is an art exhibition at RYAN LEE Gallery pairing painter Gideon Rubin with two photo-based artists, Luis Baylón and Martine Gutierrez, with cinema as the frame through which they consider tone, composition, and mood. Rubin paints from old film stills and vintage photographs, often turning his figures away to explore memory, history, identity, and anonymity. Baylón was a Spanish street photographer who captured dramatic, filmic moments of everyday Madrid, shown here in New York for the first time, while Gutierrez creates staged self-portraits drawing on cinematic influences, including works never before exhibited. Gallery partner Jeffrey Lee brought the pairing together, noting that Baylón's observations and Gutierrez's constructions are bridged by Rubin's painting.
