About
Dialogue + Studio: Embroidery Night School with Grant Jonathan is a hands-on embroidery workshop at the American Folk Art Museum, part of a three-evening series conceived with artist and activist Spandita Malik alongside the exhibition Locating Girlhood: Place and Identity in Early American "Schoolgirl" Art. For this second evening, Grant Jonathan, an award-winning Tuscarora raised beadwork artist of the Tuscarora Nation, Bear Clan, will share his knowledge of Tuscarora Raised Beadwork. Participants will learn the "hump" or "rope" stitch, which creates three-dimensional shapes by sewing beads in raised arches or layering beads over beads, and make a tiny beaded heart pincushion using this historical Indigenous art form. The workshop is open to all levels of training and experience, limited to 18 individuals, with advance registration required and all materials provided.
