About
A special program pairing never-before-seen footage of Lorraine O'Grady's one-time performance Rivers, First Draft with a Tate Modern-commissioned short film by filmmaker and actor Zawe Ashton. The 1982 performance took place in a northern section of Central Park as a 'collage-in-space,' with simultaneous actions on two sides of a stream about uniting the Caribbean and New England heritages and three ages of the self. Ashton's short film shows her visiting O'Grady at her New York home to discuss race, gender, and the challenges for Black women artists, before both visit the Central Park site. A post-screening conversation brings Ashton together with curator Catherine Morris.
