About
And the Dogs Were Silent is a screening of three short films followed by a conversation, presented at e-flux's screening room in Brooklyn. It is a program convened by writer and historian Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts, presented by the African Film Institute, which Christian Nyampeta convenes at e-flux. The films are Sarah Maldoror's Et les chiens se taisaient (1978), Stan Lathan's Statues Hardly Ever Smile (1971), and Alain Resnais and Chris Marker's Les statues meurent aussi (1953), extending Aimé Césaire's poem on the Haitian Revolution and questions of colonialism, memory, and the repatriation of cultural goods. After the screening, Rhodes-Pitts and Nyampeta will talk, as part of the African Film Institute's 2026 programming, Two Thousand Seasons.
