About
Playback is a screening of Sho Miyake's 2012 feature about Haji, an actor nearing his 40th birthday who is haunted by dreams of his own death. Answering an old friend's invitation to return to his hometown for a wedding, he dozes off on the way and wakes to find himself back in his youth, seemingly thrown into the past. The film is a bold, teasingly ambiguous portrait of middle-age melancholia, and its premiere at the 2012 Locarno Film Festival marked Miyake, then in his mid-twenties, as a filmmaker to watch. Ryusuke Hamaguchi has likened it to a modern-day reincarnation of John Cassavetes's Opening Night.
