About
The Brood is a 1979 horror film directed by David Cronenberg, screening at The Metrograph. Samantha Eggar plays Nola, a mentally disturbed woman in a bitter divorce from her ex-husband Frank (Art Hindle), who is receiving experimental therapy from the renowned Dr. Hal Raglan (Oliver Reed) at the Somafree Institute. When Frank notices that people on Nola's list of enemies keep dying at the hands of asexual, dwarfish assassins, he begins to wonder what the therapy really consists of. Written while Cronenberg was in his own divorce and custody battle, it is a brutal, bracing airing of anxieties gussied up in grindhouse trappings.

Critics
7.4Very good
Critics praise its unsettling, autobiographical power, strong performances and classic body horror atmosphere, though some note it is lesser known and at times ugly. They fault its unpleasantness, an ending that disappoints, and a thinness in its treatment of characters.
