The Curse of Frankenstein

About
A screening of the 1957 Gothic horror film 'The Curse of Frankenstein', directed by Terence Fisher and starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Awaiting the guillotine, Victor Frankenstein ruminates on the catastrophic fallout of his attempt at creating an exemplary being from scavenged bits of the dead, which results in his cracked creation going on a murderous rampage. A watershed film for both Fisher and Hammer, it earned 30 times its budget back in the US alone and established the studio as the world's preeminent purveyor of Gothic horror. Extravagantly colorful, generous with the gruesomeness, and performed with zest, it is cherished by Martin Scorsese for its 'totally uncalled for' graphic violence.

Critics
7.0Good
The critics praise the film's rich color, impressive production design, and Peter Cushing's chilling, charismatic lead performance. They fault its reliance on gory effects and note its distance from Shelley's novel, though none consider this seriously damaging.
