About
Thomas Vinterberg's 1998 melodrama/farce follows a gathering of the extended Hansen clan at a family-run hotel to celebrate patriarch Helge's 60th birthday. During a dinner table toast, Helge's eldest son Christian accuses his father of molesting both himself and his recently deceased twin sister, turning the event chaotic. An opening salvo of the Dogme 95 movement, it was revolutionary in its emancipated use of the Sony DCR-PC7 Handycam. Abrasive, volatile, savagely funny, and endlessly inventive, it is a blood-on-the-walls affair towards which one can scarcely feel indifferent.
