About

An exhibition celebrating the evocative power of the fragment in the history of sculpture, from archaeology to contemporary art. Organized by Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and curated by C. D. Dickerson III, Andrew Sears and Arturo Galansino, it brings together more than eighty works and artefacts from Ancient Egypt, Classical Greece, Michelangelo and Rodin to contemporary artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Francesco Vezzoli and Danh Vo. The show examines the fragment not simply as the remnant of a lost whole, but as an autonomous object that preserves traces of memory and transformation, prompting reflection on the value a sculpture acquires after breakage. It also features a new installation by Mark Manders conceived for the Renaissance Courtyard.
