About

A panel conversation titled "Women as Witnesses: Photography and the Algerian Revolution" taking place in person and online at the International Center of Photography's Library on New York's Lower East Side. It is led by Maura McCreight, PhD, joined by Cynthia Young, Director of the Robert Capa and Cornell Capa Archive at ICP, and filmmaker Mila Turajlić. The discussion examines women who drove the Algerian Revolution (1954–62) as combatants, nurses, and photographers, with a special focus on Elaine Mokhtefi, an American-born activist and heroine of the revolution, as well as the broader history of war photojournalism and Turajlić's film on Mokhtefi's contributions to the resistance. The panel takes place alongside an exhibition at the Palais de la Culture in Algiers opening December 2026, curated by McCreight and funded by the International Association of Friends of the Algerian Revolution (AIARA), featuring work by American photographer Kathryn Updegraff.
