Yizkor books: memorial volumes for the lost shtetls.
About
A lecture on yizkor books, the memorial volumes written primarily by Holocaust survivors for the Jewish towns of Eastern Europe known as shtetls, documenting both their day-to-day culture and their destruction during World War II. Author Jane Ziegelman, who wrote Once There Was a Town: The Memory Books of a Lost Jewish World, discusses the history and substance of these books as testaments to remembrance and resilience. The event is part of the 2026-27 Harriet & Kenneth Kupferberg Holocaust Center and National Endowment for the Humanities Colloquium 'Storytelling in/as Resistance' and is held both in person and on Zoom.
