About
«Detour» is a film noir about a nightclub pianist who hitchhikes from New York to Los Angeles and ends up stuck with a corpse on the front seat. Edgar G. Ulmer directed from a screenplay by Martin Goldsmith and Martin Mooney. Tom Neal plays the hapless pianist and Ann Savage the scheming Vera, called the most merciless femme fatale in film history. On a shoestring budget, Ulmer turned meagre production values into unforgettable pulp poetry, inspiring filmmakers such as Richard Linklater.

Critics
7.4Very good
Critics admire the film's bleak, fatalistic noir atmosphere, resourceful low-budget direction, and Ann Savage's terrifying femme fatale. They fault its weak script, cheap production values, and the dated performances of its unknown cast.
