A lecture about the young J.R.R. Tolkien's journey through the Swiss Alps in the summer of 1911 and how it shaped his later literary work. Sarah Heinzelmann and Lukas Ritzel trace the footsteps of this journey and show how landscapes and experiences from Switzerland flowed into the geography and atmosphere of Middle-earth. The talk illuminates the connection between real places and fantastic worlds. Attendance is free, but registration is required.
