About

«The Ceremony (Gishiki)» is a 1971 feature film by Nagisa Oshima. Over more than a quarter century it follows the Sakurada clan in its grim striving to uphold reputation and honour. Masuo, the family's youngest descendant, fights through a sequence of weddings and funerals to keep the Sakuradas' secrets – incest, simmering resentment and more – buried. Each hollow ceremony becomes another step toward their own downfall.
