Wenn die Erde bebt - Erdbebensimulator
ETH Zürich, Sonneggstrasse 5, 8006 Zürich, Rieden
About
The earthquake simulator is a device weighing over three tonnes, set up inside a container-like room furnished with tables and other movable objects, with room for up to 10 people at a time. Using real recorded earthquake signals, it simulates the ground movements of earthquakes up to magnitude 8, which visitors can experience safely on their own bodies. In 2006 the Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU) had the simulator developed and built, supported by the cantonal building insurance of Freiburg and the Foundation for Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering. The simulation is meant to raise awareness that Switzerland, too, is at risk from earthquakes and to show how to behave correctly during one.
