Der Hauptmann von Köpenick – Vom Sträfling zur Legende
Rathaus Köpenick, Alt-Köpenick 21, 12555 Berlin, Köpenick
About
The permanent exhibition “Der Hauptmann von Köpenick – Vom Sträfling zur Legende” is presented by the Museen Treptow-Köpenick in the district office's department of culture and can be seen in Köpenick's town hall. On 16 October 1906 the unemployed shoemaker Wilhelm Voigt took over the town hall wearing a captain's uniform bought from a junk dealer, detained the mayor and had the municipal cash box handed over to him. The exhibition traces the course of this “Köpenickiade” and shows what military norms and values meant in Wilhelmine Berlin. It also addresses the legends that began to form right after the raid and the tragicomic personality of Wilhelm Voigt.
