umbenennen?! Straßennamen in Treptow und Köpenick
Museum Köpenick, Alter Markt 1, 12555 Berlin, Köpenick
About
umbenennen?! Straßennamen in Treptow und Köpenick is an exhibition at Museum Köpenick that traces how streets in Berlin's Treptow-Köpenick district have been named from the German Empire to today. The local part is put on by the Museen Treptow-Köpenick, while the Berlin-wide core exhibition of the "umbenennen?!" series by the Aktives Museum Faschismus und Widerstand in Berlin e. V., together with Berlin's regional museums, is shown alongside it. It covers the main naming phases, political and social turning points and how the legacy of the past still shapes public space, with a close look at names taken from real people. Of about 1,300 streets in the district, around 430 honour historical figures, 48 names date from the Nazi period, and only some 9 percent commemorate women.
