Einar Schleef – Ich habe kein Deutschland gefunden
About
The documentary „Einar Schleef – Ich habe kein Deutschland gefunden“ portrays the theater-maker and all-round artist Einar Schleef, who died far too early in 2001, having fled from the East and never arrived in the West. Director Sandra Prechtel composed a richly faceted portrait from historical footage, interviews and archive material of a defiant loner with an enfant terrible reputation. The film tells of theater, the repressive mechanisms of postwar society and, unlike familiar accounts, of German-German reality. It premiered in the Forum of the 2026 Berlinale and won the Documentary Audience Award at the NFF and the CLIO Award 2026.

The review praises the richly layered portrait built from Schleef's own audio and visual archives and its take on German-German reality. No notable faults are mentioned.
