I Hold You in Devotion

"I Hold You in Devotion" is a solo exhibition of ambitious large-scale sculptures, bold new paintings and a collaborative performance piece that together transform the gallery space into a site of ritual, tension and care. Behind it is the American Japanese artist Makiko Harris, whose practice explores the performance of identity, embodiment and ideas of belonging; at its centre are five four-metre-long sewing needles, oversized lockets holding real human hair, and works weighing vulnerability against strength, sensuality against violence. The sculptures are activated at the opening by a live performance featuring dancers, an original score by Carlos Basilisco and custom rope sculptures by couture designer Deborah Milner, with Harris herself as both performer and musician.
