About
Ich war neunzehn is an autobiographical war film by Konrad Wolf. It follows Gregor, a nineteen-year-old German-born soldier who grew up in Moscow and returns to his birth country in the final days of the Second World War as a soldier of the Red Army. Because he speaks German fluently, he is mainly in demand as an interpreter and a bearer of messages, yet his former homeland has become foreign to him. The film does not want to tell a heroic story, but one about identity, guilt and the end of something.
