About
A book presentation and discussion of Karl Loewenstein's text "Militante Demokratie und Grundrechte", published in the USA in 1937 and appearing in German for the first time. Loewenstein describes fascism as a "method for destroying democracy through emotions" and shows how democracies can defend themselves through law and legislation. The discussion will cover his analyses of European countries and the question of how far democratic self-defence may go, from party bans to temporary restrictions on civil liberties. Speaking are Tobias Roth, Petra Dobner, Anna-Bettina Kaiser and Magdalena Hess, moderated by Dietrich Herrmann; the event takes place at the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung in Berlin and is additionally streamed live.
