The Devils

Ken Russell's scandalous film 'The Devils' returns to the cinema as an uncut director's cut in a digitally restored 4K version. The film with Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave was considered censored or kept under wraps for over 50 years because of its provocative religious and sex scenes. In 17th-century France, the priest Urbain Grandier defends his city against the claims of the crown; when he rejects the advances of the nun Jeanne, she accuses him of witchcraft out of revenge. The political leadership exploits the nuns' collective hysteria to eliminate the inconvenient freethinker, who is finally condemned to death at the stake in a manipulated show trial.
