The Village

About
“The Village” is a solo exhibition of paintings and objects by Ruth Speer at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery; the date given is the private view. At its heart is Speer's folktale of a woman and a dragon, who appears in different forms – as a man, a tree, even merging with the woman herself – in a story about love and the ways it challenges and changes us. The title echoes the phrase “it takes a village”: many works were made in the early months of her motherhood, relying on the support of loved ones, and are imagined as artefacts of a mythical village. Many paintings are set in repurposed antique mirrors or cabinets, while others work as games or toys, inviting us to take part in telling the story.
