About

Banana Paradise is a screening of Wang Toon's 1989 Taiwanese film, part of The Garden Cinema's Made in Taiwan season. It follows a naive young man who follows the Kuomintang forces from China to Taiwan in 1949, adopting false names as he adjusts to life amid turbulent socio-economic changes. The film, the second chapter in Wang's 'Modern Taiwan Trilogy', addresses the cruelties of martial law as a tragicomic melodrama, alongside rural-urban migration and the demands of modernisation. The screening on 8 November will be introduced by Tom Cunliffe (UCL) and shows a new restoration, with Doze Niu Chen-Zer, Chang Shih and Wen Ying in the cast.
