About

Strawman is a 1987 Taiwanese film screening at The Garden Cinema. Directed by Wang Toon, it opens his 'Modern Taiwan Trilogy' and is shot by cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-bing, winning six Golden Horse Awards including Best Feature Film. Set in 1940s Taiwan, it follows two impoverished tenant farmers who, finding an unexploded American bomb in their field, carry it to the Japanese authorities hoping for a reward, as their plan spirals into absurdity. The film stars Cho Sheng Li, Chang Po-Chou and Yang Kuei-Mei.
