About
Taipei Story is Edward Yang's 1985 film about Lung, who runs a traditional textile business, and Chin, an assistant at a construction company, a couple whose dreams of marriage and emigration in a developing Taipei begin to unravel as they desperately try to maintain their relationship. The film depicts the alienation of urban life and was made in collaboration with Taiwan New Cinema master Hou Hsiao-hsien, who takes the male lead and serves as screenwriter and producer. It stars Hou Hsiao-hsien, Tsai Chin and Ko I-Chen. Yang's exceptional directorial skills are a testament to the camaraderie among New Cinema filmmakers.

Critics
8.1Very good
The critic praises the film's calm, realistic portrayal of society and its haunting, melancholic mood, though notes it demands patience. Faults include slow narrative pacing and a detached storytelling style that initially keeps viewers at a distance.
